In the Shade of the Plane Tree

The village square had fallen asleep in the golden warmth of the late afternoon. On the light-colored paving stones, seven figures had gathered around a circle of boules. The plane tree cast its green shadow across the ground. Somewhere, a game was waiting its turn—or rather, it had already begun, and no one yet knew who would score the point.
